Properly Storing Fragrances - Do's and Don'ts

Properly Storing Fragrances - Do's and Don'ts

If you have ever purchased a fragrance, then you know that it can be expensive. Unfortunately for us all, deterioration happens the moment you spray your fragrance. Therefore, it is important that we are mindful about how we store our fragrances as the compositions that makes up some of our favorite scents are extremely delicate.

Below we have listed a few Dos and Don’ts to best care and maintain your fragrance so that you can continue to get optimal performance for years to come.

DO

Keep your fragrance in a dark, dry place like a cabinet.

DON’T

Store fragrance in the bathroom.

Bathrooms have temperature fluctuations and humidity that can cause the fragrance composition to change.

DO

Keep your fragrances away from constant light, a dark, dry place is the best option.

DON’T

Store your fragrances in direct sunlight or in front of windows as this will also interfere with the fragrance composition.

DO

Place your fragrances on a mid-level shelf, not too high for an accident, but not too low for children or pets to get ahold of them.

DON’T

Store your fragrances on high shelves.

This is a recipe for disaster. Some fragrance bottles are fragile and the last thing you need is a broken bottle and wasted product.

Even if your bottle does not break, the impact from the fall can break the chemical bonds and interfere with the essence of the fragrance.

5 Ways to Properly Store Fragrances

DO

Put the top back on.

DON’T

Forget to place the top back on your fragrance.  Sounds minor, I know.  However, oxygen is another enemy of your fragrance.

DO

Transfer a small amount of fragrance into a small glass sample bottle or purchase an atomizer. This is another way to easily refresh your scent while on the go.

DON’T

Travel with a full-size bottle of fragrance.  There are too many uncontrollable circumstances that can happen along the way.

DO

Just spray your fragrance, it's ready out of the bottle.

DON’T

Shake your bottle of fragrance.  The bubbles that result from the shaking can cause oxidation of your fragrance and can ruin the scent.

DO

Keep your fragrance at a consistent temperature. Try to aim between 60 and 70 degrees.

DON’T

Expose your fragrance to varying temperatures.

What about the refrigerator?

Well, it depends on who you talk to.  Some people have found that the refrigerator increases their fragrance’s longevity.  Whereas others are concerned about the constant light and temperature changes.

It is said that eau de colognes, eau fraiche, and eau de toilettes are good for the refrigerator due to having lower concentrations of fragrance.

If you want to store your fragrance in a refrigerator, our recommendation is to purchase a mini refrigerator for skin products. A mini refrigerator is small enough to hold fragrances, and they also do not have lights.

If you choose to go the refrigerator route, make sure it is for the less concentrated fragrances listed above. You will also want to make sure that you set your mini refrigerator at the proper temperature.

We hope these suggestions are helpful to you.

As always,

Break necks, not noses!
