Did you know that fragrances have 3 layers to them? Top (head) notes, heart (middle) notes, and base notes. You may even go on certain websites and see the ‘Fragrance Pyramid’ or see top, heart, and base notes displayed on an information card at a fragrance counter. This pyramid of notes is here to display the composition of a fragrance. Additionally, understanding where these notes fall within the pyramid shows how the notes evaporate as the fragrance evolves.
When you first spray a fragrance, it is important to give it a minimum of 5 to 15 minutes to allow it to dry down and develop a little. This will give you an idea of how the fragrance will mix with your body chemistry. Your body chemistry is important because true fragrance performance and smell is determined by your body heat and moisture on the skin. Moreover, since we are all uniquely made, notes will smell differently on each person.
All fragrances are created with several notes from citrus, floral, woody, spice, fruity, etc. Additionally, these notes all fall within the pyramid and will tell you how long you will experience the notes before they transition into the next set of notes.
Key Things to Remember:
- While a paper scent stick will give you an ideal smell of a fragrance, the best representation of how a fragrance will smell is best tested on the skin.
- What smells good on one person, may not smell good with your body chemistry.
- What smells awful on one person, may smell fantastic on you.
